- _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l is the historic interface to modifying parameters used in the
- sendmail.cf _s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l._c_f file shipped with IRIX to obtain information
- about the local mail environment. _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l can also be executed by the
- user to display and/or modify that information.
-
- _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l is no longer the primary way to configure the _s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l._c_f
- file. The correct way is to modify the _s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l._m_c file. _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l
- can be used to generate a new _s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l._c_f from the information and
- settings in the _s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l._m_c file.
-
- _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l can be run in one of several _m_o_d_es. The _m_o_d_es mmmmcccc2222ccccffff, hhhheeeellllpppp,
- ggggeeeetttt, sssseeeetttt, uuuunnnnsssseeeetttt, and ppppeeeerrrrccccppppuuuu take an additional _p_a_r_a_m_e_t_e_r argument. The
- remaining _m_o_d_es, lllliiiisssstttt ,,,, mmmmcccc2222ccccffff,,,, mmmm4444 ,,,, and sssseeeettttuuuupppp, take no additional
- _p_a_r_a_m_e_t_e_r argument.
-
- The _p_a_r_a_m_e_t_e_r argument can be one of:
-
- ffffoooorrrrwwwwaaaarrrrddddeeeerrrr The name of the forwarder host.
-
- rrrroooooooottttddddoooommmmaaaaiiiinnnn The common domain suffix of all domains to be considered
- local.
-
- ddddiiiirrrreeeeccccttttddddoooommmmaaaaiiiinnnnssss The names of all domains for which this host is a relay or
- exchanger host.
-
- llllooooccccaaaallllddddoooommmmaaaaiiiinnnn The name of the local domain.
-
- lllloooogggglllleeeevvvveeeellll The sendmail Loglevel. Defaults to 1.
-
- ppppaaaatttthhhhaaaalllliiiiaaaassss The location of the UUCP path-alias database.
-
- rrrreeeellllaaaayyyynnnnaaaammmmeeee The hostname or alias used for all relay hosts.
-
- rrrreeeeccccssssuuuubbbbddddoooommmmaaaaiiiinnnnssss Recognized subdomains. This parameter only has effect
- when the Gauntlet for IRIX product is installed on the
- system.
-
- ddddeeeeaaaaddddhhhhoooossssttttssss The list of all hosts in the local domain that no longer
- exist or are otherwise permanently unreachable. Note that
- the contents of this parameter are actually determined by
- an external file, /_e_t_c/_s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l._k_i_l_l_e_d, and that the
- ddddeeeeaaaaddddhhhhoooossssttttssss parameter can only be displayed and not modified
- via _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l.

-
-
-
- nnnnuuuummmmccccppppuuuussss The number of cpus available for sendmail to use. This
- value is determined at run time, and can not be set.
-
- The ppppeeeerrrrccccppppuuuu _m_o_d_e takes an argument of a positive intger, and will return
- that value times the value nnnnuuuummmmccccppppuuuussss ....
-
- The default value of each of the above parameters is calculated at
- runtime by _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l. The values thus calculated, when read by the
- autoconfiguring _s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l._c_f file, should result in a working _s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l
- configuration. It may, however, be necessary to override the calculated
- default values of one or more parameters in some situations. For this
- purpose, the sssseeeetttt and sssseeeettttuuuupppp modes have been provided.
-
- The sssseeeetttt mode provides an interactive interface through which the user can
- override the calculated default value or change the current override
- setting of the given _p_a_r_a_m_e_t_e_r. If the user chooses to set a value for
- the parameter that is different from the calculated default, the new
- value is stored in a file with the name /_e_t_c/_s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l._p_a_r_a_m_s. If the
- value of this parameter is changed as a result of the user's selection,
- _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l prompts the user to restart the _s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l daemon so that the
- new value of the parameter is honored.
-
- The sssseeeettttuuuupppp mode takes no _p_a_r_a_m_e_t_e_r argument. It recursively calls
- _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l in the sssseeeetttt mode to obtain settings for the most commonly
- overridden parameters. It prompts the user to verify and possibly change
- the settings of any other parameters that are currently overridden.
-
- The uuuunnnnsssseeeetttt mode is used to remove any override setting and restore the
- calculated default value of the given _p_a_r_a_m_e_t_e_r. As with the sssseeeetttt and
- sssseeeettttuuuupppp modes, if the value of the parameter is changed from its previous
- value, _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l prompts the user to restart the _s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l daemon so that
- the new value of the parameter is honored.
-
- The hhhheeeellllpppp mode takes a _p_a_r_a_m_e_t_e_r argument and prints the available help
- text associated with that parameter.
-
- The lllliiiisssstttt mode takes no arguments. It displays the current settings of
- the various configurable parameters plus the values of some internal
- variables. This mode is intended to be used as a debugging aid.
-
- The mmmm4444 mode is similar to the lllliiiisssstttt mode, but it's output is intended to
- be parsed by the mmmm4444 macro processor.
-
- The mmmmcccc2222ccccffff mode is used to generate a _s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l._c_f file, applying the
- features and settings defined in the _s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l._m_c file.
-
- The ggggeeeetttt mode is used to obtain the current value of the given _p_a_r_a_m_e_t_e_r.
-
- WWWWAAAARRRRNNNNIIIINNNNGGGG
- When called from _s_e_n_d_m_a_i_l._c_f, _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l must be called in the ggggeeeetttt mode
- only. The other modes are intended to be used by a human operator.

- If an error is detected while running in the hhhheeeellllpppp, lllliiiisssstttt, mmmm4444, or sssseeeettttuuuupppp
- mode, _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l places an appropriate error message on standard output
- and exit with a nonzero value.
-
- If an error is detected while running in the ggggeeeetttt mode, _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l places
- a null string on standard output and exit with a value of 0. The ggggeeeetttt
- mode never exits with a nonzero value.
-
- If an error is detected while running in the sssseeeetttt or uuuunnnnsssseeeetttt mode,
- _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l places a diagnostic message on standard output and exit with a
- value of 1. If _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l successfully modifies the requested parameter,
- it exits with a value of 2. If no error is detected, and the parameter
- is unchanged, _c_o_n_f_i_g_m_a_i_l exits with a value of 0.
